5 Health Symptoms You Should Never Ignore — Even If They Seem Small

Sometimes our bodies give us warning signs that are easy to dismiss.

You might think, “It’s probably nothing,” or “I’ll feel better tomorrow.” And sometimes, it really is something minor. But certain symptoms can sometimes be signs of a health problem that needs medical attention.

Knowing when to pay attention to your body can make a big difference.

Here are 5 symptoms you shouldn’t simply ignore.

1. Chest Pain or Pressure

Chest pain can have many causes, including problems that are not related to the heart. However, sudden or severe chest pain, especially when accompanied by shortness of breath, sweating, nausea, dizziness, or pain spreading to the arm, back, neck, or jaw, can be an emergency.

Don’t simply wait for it to go away. Seek urgent medical attention.

2. Sudden Difficulty Breathing

Being short of breath after intense exercise can be normal. But unexplained or sudden difficulty breathing deserves attention.

It can sometimes be associated with conditions affecting the heart, lungs, or other parts of the body.

If breathing difficulty is severe or comes on suddenly, seek emergency medical care.

3. Sudden Weakness, Numbness, or Difficulty Speaking

Sudden weakness or numbness, particularly on one side of the body, difficulty speaking, confusion, trouble seeing, or a sudden severe headache can be warning signs of a stroke.

Every minute can matter.

If these symptoms appear suddenly, seek emergency medical help immediately rather than waiting to see whether they disappear.

4. Unexplained Weight Loss

Losing weight without intentionally changing your diet or physical activity may have many possible explanations.

Sometimes it can be related to stress, changes in appetite, or other relatively simple causes. But unexplained or significant weight loss can also be associated with medical conditions that need evaluation.

If you’ve been losing weight without trying, talk to a healthcare professional.

5. A Wound That Isn’t Healing Properly

Most minor cuts and wounds gradually improve.

However, if a wound doesn’t seem to be healing, repeatedly opens, becomes increasingly painful, or develops signs such as redness, swelling, warmth, or pus, it should be checked by a healthcare professional.

People with certain medical conditions may also need to take particular care with wounds.

Don’t Ignore What Your Body Is Telling You

Not every unusual symptom means something serious.

But paying attention to persistent, severe, sudden, or unexplained changes can help you know when it’s time to seek professional advice.

Your symptoms are not something to be embarrassed about or ignored.

If something doesn’t feel right, it’s okay to ask questions.
